Nomenclature: Cottage or Cabin?
I used to love cabins, years ago. They're dark and woody and rustic, with woolens and forests.
Now I prefer cottages, light and airy, with cottons and ocean.
What fits your mood?

Mar Vista's cottages are simple wood frame clapboard buildings of classic seaside cottage architecture built in the 1930s and 1940s. The one bedroom cottages are just under 400 square feet, the two bedroom cottages just under 600 square feet. They are all newly restored, with a light touch in honor of their past.

Some have fireplaces, some have wood stoves, some have gas logs, some have decks, most have oceans views. Each has an open kitchen and living-dining area, a bedroom or two, and a bathroom. The one-bedroom cottage bathrooms have showers, the two-bedroom cottages have tubs with showers.

The walls are off white with bead and board wainscoting and lots of Shaker pegrail. The floors are a honey colored oak, and in between is a collection of country furniture, some painted, some natural, some slipcovered, all with history. Multicolored cotton rag rugs are underfoot here and there.

|
There are goose down pillows and comforters on the beds. The comforters are encased in a duvet over flannel bottoms.
The living-dining room windows have interior wooden shutters, the bedroom and bathroom windows have single, flat linen panels that hang on Shaker pegs, we call them "window hankies."

There are no TVs, VCRs, radios or telephones. You can hear the ocean roar, the creek ripple and sometimes rumble, the wind rustle through the forest, the sea lions bark, the frogs croak, and I mean it, the birds chirp.
There is no longer a public telephone at the office; but a cordless phone and a plug-in for downloading are available. Incoming phone messages are delivered day or night

The kitchens are old fashioned. There is a gas range, refrigerator, and a wonderful assortment of dishes, flatware, pots and pans, toaster and utensils. There are no microwaves or electric coffee makers. The coffee service is a stove-top percolator pot and individual Melita cones with paper filters.

Does this sound ascetic? On the contrary, pleasures surround, but the mood is uncluttered and uncomplicated,
simple and serene, many call it liberating.
There are no chatchkas.
The palette is your's.
